INSIDE THE ORGANIZATION
Establishing partnerships and advocacies with other bodies for leveraging resources that effect multi-fold change towards improved quality of life of rural communities is an ongoing process at REEDS. While REEDS carry majority of the initiatives for or in association with government agencies, it has also partnered with some agencies that have fundamentally similar objects. We introduce in this month, The Andhyodaya, one such agency:

THE ANDHYODAYA is a Kerala based NGO working towards community development focusing in the areas of Non-conventional Energy promotion and Environmental Sanitation with emphasis on Water Management. It has won the coveted UNESCO INDIA water award for the best Rain Water-Harvesting NGO in the country. www.theandyodaya.org. REEDS in collaboration with Andhyodaya has entered into the area of Rain Water Harvesting and until now REEDS has established Rain Water Harvesting Structures in over 50 schools in Andhra Pradesh.

GUEST COLUMN
We are happy to note that the purpose of our communication imitative – REEDS NEWS is yielding its desired objective! Individuals who believe and would like to participate in our mission are offering to share their ideas towards the cause. We bring herewith one of such contributions:

Time to promote Rain Water Harvesting!

Summer always reminds us of the precious use of water. Dried bore wells, and long queues of empty vessels are a regular feature! After going through such crises one would expect that when the monsoon arrives we would take up enough measures to save the water. Instead, we let go the precious water in the drains and do absolutely nothing to store the rain water. We have advertisements prompting insurance policies which advocate savings for the future and for the difficult days ahead. It’s time that we have similar ad’s promoting the Rain Water Harvesting. Let’s make the concept of Rain Water Harvesting a way of life. ---
G. Sneha Sudhir

Possibly, the era of free water is over. Along with oil, gold , food grains , water will be an important commodity which will rule the world.
Since water touches every aspect of our survival, it will also be highly politicized. Newer coalitions will be formed in the next two decades around this resource and maybe, will speak the voice of the people. Commoditizing will also bring in corporate interest and investments into this sector. It is in this context that the impact of initiatives such as ours has to be seen. There will be a demand for equitable distribution of a resource which will become dearer and scarce in the days to come. There will be peoples’ initiatives, which hopefully will ensure fair processes for collection, storage and distribution of water. There should be more laws devised for the regulation of water as a resource at every stage of its product cycle.
This includes laws to regulate dams, irrigation, drinking water, ground water, purification, desalination and sanitation and drainage. In the next three decades, we should expect people to come together in various groups for each of these and even more. In chasing this resource, it should be ensured that the poor are not left out in the race for this commodity. Our attempt will be to sensitize the disadvantaged groups for community action in these areas.
